Literary Fiction emphasizes characterization over all other aspects of novels. A LitFi work may have a cardboard plot, no philosophical underpinnings, and no exploration of ideas about the world at large and still be good within the genre aethetic. The only requirement is a thorough exploration and portrayal of the human psyche.
