This is a very, very solid book. It never becomes a social satire nor does it philosophise, but that's not important. There's a healthy whack of parody sprinkled with lots of hardc0re cynicism and one-upped by the left-field factor with lots of good lines on top. Also, the whole thingamajig is held together by this awesome chewing gum of cool.

Ashnak the Orc leads his tribe to death, world conquest, and a great deal of halfling meat with the help of modern military doctrine and hardware. It is the anti-LotR (though that's just its night job;).

There is a healthy dose of BDSM, decent gender balance for a change, and a sublimely delicious disdain for the sanctity of life.:)

I recommend this book. Myself, I will be seeking out Mary Gentle's Ash: A Secret History and 1610.
