Adjunct Tavore of the Malazan Empire lands with three fresh legions in Aren, the capital of the rebelling continent of the Seven Cities. She rallies the broken troops of Coltaine's death march across the continent.

In the arid heart of the continent, a divine whirlwind of sand protects the veteran rebel hordes. Unbeknownst to Tavore, these are now headed by Felisin, the sister whom she condemned to the slave mines in order to prove her loyalty to the Empire.

The reborn High Priestess Felisin has her hands full with intrigue. Her priests bicker, mutilate genitalia, and sulk as insecure demigods are wont to do. Her generals plot stuff.

One of Felisin's two bodyguards has his own problems. He is Karsa Orlong, a Thelomen Toblakai giant from the barbaric north. Having broken out of the ancient prison of his peoples, he wants stuff to happen.

I read this two months ago, and I am sure there was much more to the plot (which resolves epically to my satisfaction). Kalam assassinates his way across the desert. The Tiste Edur find the Throne of Shadow, much to the displeasure of the Tiste Andii. Apsalar and Crokus trek about.

A possible theory is advanced for what Shadowthrone and Cotillion are really up to.

It's a fantastic self-contained volume, as were the preceeding Gardens of the Moon, Deadhouse Gates, and Memories of Ice. I recommend it.
