Oh, Gods. I have a love/hate relationship with Pratchett books. They are addictive enough to finish in one day, but they tend to leave me wishing violence on the author.

Take Monstrous Regiment. The first two thirds are awesome. Hilarious. Leave me guffawing like a common spotted guffaw of North Kansas. Then Terry Pratchett locks up the real characters in his basement and replaces everyone with Terry Pratchett Stepford wives that act as a nice unanimous soapbox for his tabloid moralizing.

Gah. Terry Pratchett is a superlative comic writer, but his judgemental, opinionated, asshole-like manner make me want to punch his nose until his toes bleed.

Anyways, a barkeep named Polly Perks adopts the guise of Oliver Perks and enlists in the Borogravian army. Be Proud of Borogravia, Because It Is Ours. Borogravia is at war with everyone. It's losing badly. Polly's band of recruits end up as the only part of the Borogravian army that's free to manoeuvre.

As noted above, I finished Monstrous Regiment in one day. Fun read.
