Clarence, the Ninth Earl of Emsworth, has finally rid self of the wretched Personal Secretary "Efficient" Baxter and has hired a fine sporting chap by the name of Hugo Carmody in Baxter's stead. Hugo is of a much more phlegmatic bent than Baxter and does not bother Clarence when he is with his beloved pig, Empress of Blandings.

Along with Clarence, Blandings Castle is also home to cousins Millicent and Ronnie Fish and to Lady Constance who'd very much like for them to get married.

Unfortunately for Lady Clarence, Millicent has a thing for Hugo whereas Ronnie Fish very much prefers Sue Brown, a choirgirl. However, Lady Clarence holds the pursestrings to their trust funds. Matters complicate.

Soon, jealous rows erupt, crazy schemes are hatched, pigs are stolen, flower pots are hurled, and scandalous tell-all autobiographies are written. Did I mentioned the stolen pigs and the crazy schemes? Well, pigs are stolen and crazy schemes are hatched. In all of the possible orders.

Wodehouse is a deft dabbler in the fine art of cooky comedy. Delightfully dry wit pours from every estuary and senseless schemes deliver the goofy goods.

I recommend this tome.
