Uhm. Earth bar. Regulars like to break glasses like the good little consumers they are. Weird people stop by.
The Callahan Chronicals is a fairly odd book. It's amusing in places. In others, it's startling in a bad way. The author reads more as troubled than as brilliant.
Much like a typical Wodehouse, the chapters are noticeably episodic. However, the overall plot just isn't there. Yes, things change. Yes, it ends with a bang that brings it all together. No, there is no real buildup. There is too much repetition.
There is a great number of puns, many of which sail over(?) my head. I guess you could call them a running gag, except that they aren't very funny. A quirk maybe.
It is certainly interesting when the woman that the narrator and two other important characters consider the epitome of female beauty pees herself. Not really sure how to take that. Nothing against the fetish, of course, but definitely a "huh" moment.
Some nice touches. A character dies of AIDS. SF references. Uhm. Something or other. Overall, there's a failure of imagination on the part of the author.
Don't bother. Read the Holy Guide again instead.;)
